Durabook's tough SA14 gets upgraded and can still be beaten

Updated Durabook SA14 R3 semi-rugged notebook for use in field situations. It now includes Kaby Lake and Windows 10 Pro in addition to a carry handle and the ability to survive rough handling.

GammaTech Computer Corporation, a subsidiary of ruggedized computer equipment manufacturers based in the United States, has just announced an upgrade to their SA14 Durabook. R4 SA14 is a 14-inch ruggedized laptop designed for use in areas such as oil and gas exploration, utility companies, logistics, field services, or military applications where the ability to withstand abuse is more important than being fashionable.

Processor options have been upgraded from Skylake with R2 up to now including Kaby Lake U-series, especially i5-7200U (2.5 / 3.1 GHz), i7-7500U (2.7 / 3.5 GHz), and i7-7600U with vPro (2.8 / 3.9 GHz). The system is now installed with Windows 10 Pro, and the newer processor architecture combined with a more mobile optimized operating system has resulted in longer battery life. The 2.5-inch hard drive tray can slide out of the body allowing the second optional battery to be in place. GammaTech claims a 14 hour battery life, but it's unclear whether this was before or after adding a second battery.

Depending on the preferred configuration option when purchasing, the Durabook SA14 R3 comes with a 1366 x 768 resolution screen that can reach up to 500 nits to improve outdoor readability. This resolution is low for 2017 devices, but taking into account the environment and circumstances used Durabook laptops, easy-to-understand compromise to improve battery life and screen brightness (less dense pixel structure). Storage and memory options include 500 to 1000 GB 2.5 inch HDD or SSDs between 128 and 1000 GB, while the choice of RAM ranges from 8 to 32 GB. Other specifications include the Intel AC8260 (2x2 802.11ac) WiFi card, Bluetooth 4.2, 4G LTE, fingerprint scanner, smart card reader, and TPM 2.0.

Physical I/O is handled by:

  • 1 x USB3.0
  • 1 x USB3.0/eSATA combo
  • 2 x USB2.0
  • 2 x RJ-45 1000Gbps LAN
  • 1 x 3.5 mm combo jack
  • 1 x VGA port
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • 1 x RS232 serial port
  • Dual RF pass-through

Durabook SA14 R3 was given IP53 for water and dust resistance, something that GammaTech claims is the industry's leading edge

MIL-STD-810G has been accepted for drop and vibration rating. To achieve this rating and battery life, as well as holding several large connection ports designed for older standards, the Durabook is large enough with this model sized 13.46 x 11.1 x 1.85 inches (342 x 282 x 47 mm) L x W x H, and weighs 7.48 pounds (3.4 Kg).

Durabook SA14 R3 will be available by the end of 2017 with a basic configuration starting from US $ 1698. The Skylake model will still be available for organizations that want to stay on Windows 7 Pro.
